It is based on the RAPID-series fast breeder reactor using a liquid lithium-6 design. The study was funded by the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute in FY 1999-2001. The research was carried out by Japan's Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry, Komae Research Laboratory.

SNAP-10A - SNAP-10A was a US experimental nuclear powered satellite launched into space in 1965 as part of the SNAPSHOT program. The test marked both the world's first operation of a nuclear reactor in orbit, and the first operation of an ion thruster system in orbit.
